My gold Rolex is engraved "IAQN," which stands for "I Am Qualified Now." Maybe I fell for the marketing back in the '80s, but more likely it was because all of the people I admired who had reached the pinnacle of success in our profession wore this watch. It became a symbol - to me - of achieving the same level of success. These people became my friends, mentors and inspiration. My watch symbolizes to me that I have reached that same level of success.
Ironically, I recently had a chance to wear a gold Rolex that somebody else I admire received for achieving an incredible success in their own profession. It is engraved with his name and the subject of that achievement. While I was wearing it, I felt like a fraud. I felt like I had not earned it, because the watch commemorated the achievement of another person I could not possibly hope to repeat. My feelings were not about status. It was all about working toward a goal and being rewarded for achieving it. To me, that is where true contentment resides.
Love this Tommy. I have a passion for watches but for me it’s about the feeling I get from the watch, not the feeling it gives others about me. I’ve looked at lots of watches online that I think I like and after trying it on, it doesn’t feel right. When you finally find a piece that speaks to you, you feel an immediate connection. I enjoy the feeling I get when I wear a nice watch, and will often catch myself staring at the dial in the middle of a meeting. Watches have a special way of capturing memories and are often passed down to future generations to create a lasting connection. I’d be curious if you’d have the same feeling if you tried to buy a watch for yourself and not for someone else!
